International Training of Trainers

Every year the IFOR’s Women Peacemakers Program organizes an international Training of nonviolence trainers (ToT) for women. The goals are to deepen women’s understanding of active nonviolence, and to equip them with skills to conduct nonviolence trainings. Another goal is to develop gender-sensitive nonviolence training.

The women have a two-week training of trainers, then return home, where they must conduct two gender-sensitive nonviolence trainings. They are connected to a mentor, and the WPP helps provide seed money for these nonviolence trainings. The next year the same women come together for a follow-up two week training, to discuss the challenges and obstacles they face as nonviolence trainers.

What happens when you train 16 women?
- You reach out to 1,056 people all over the world!

WPP conducted two Training of Trainers (ToT), which took place in June 2004 and April 2005. The ToTs were attended by 16 women from Australia, East Timor, India (Nagaland), Italy, Iraq, Japan, Kenya, Madagascar, Nigeria, Philippines, Sierra Leone, Switzerland, and Zimbabwe. Upon return home, participants organized two mandatory follow-up trainings in their countries.
IFOR’s Women Peacemakers Program assisted with seed money, materials, and a mentor to support their performance as a trainer. read more >

Women Peace Leaders Meet Again in the Netherlands

Training of Trainers – Part II
1 – 15 April 2005
Soesterberg, the Netherlands

The first training of the second international Training of Trainers (ToT) took place from June 25 until July 9, 2004. The follow-up Training of Trainers is planned for April 1-15, 2005, and will re-unite the sixteen international participants for another 14-days training. A working group of experienced trainers will conduct sessions on gender-sensitive nonviolence training, women’s leadership, religion and nonviolence, reconciliation, and women’s human rights.
Participants use one day of their stay in The Netherlands to visit and establish links with Dutch NGOs in their field of interest.

In addition, five participants (from Asia, Africa and the Caucasus) from the first Training of Trainers program will attend the second week of the Training of Trainers. Purpose of this initiative is to monitor the long-term impact of the ToT, and to strengthen the establishment of regional networks of women peace builders.

Before attending the Training of Trainers in April, the sixteen participants are required to carry out their two follow-up nonviolence trainings in their own communities. Mentors have been assigned to evaluate their trainings. Input from these evaluations, such as challenges faced during the trainings will be used to design the 2005 ToT program.

The report of the 2005 Training of Trainers will be published before 1 July 2005 and disseminated amongst ToT participants, IFOR branches, groups and affiliates (BGAs), and upon request.

Nominations for WPP Training of Trainers

Dear IFOR Branch, Group or Affiliate and
non-governmental organizations,

The IFOR Women Peacemakers Program (WPP) is pleased to announce its annual Training of Trainers.
We are asking for recommendations for participants in the annual WPP Training of Trainers. The training will be held next year, from 10 June to 26 June 2006, in the Netherlands.

WPP will cover the costs of flight tickets, accommodations, meals, training materials, and visa permits costs of participants.
Any other expenses of the participants will not be covered by WPP.
WPP will not pay any daily stipend to participants.

The WPP Training of Trainers is a two-week intensive training for 14 women. The Training of Trainers is highly participatory and aids women in developing and improving their skills as trainers in gender and active nonviolence. An important aspect of the Training of Trainers is developing ideas and approaches to gender sensitive active nonviolence training. The WPP Training of Trainers is a pioneering effort in developing a gender sensitive approach to nonviolence training and education.

Some points to consider when you recommend possible participants: Participants must stay for the entire two-week period. They must also return the following year (2007) for a two-week follow-up program. In the period between ToT’s, the WPP will link them with an experienced mentor and support them in organizing one (1) follow-up training in their home country, to pass on the knowledge and skills gained. Participants must have previous experience as gender and nonviolence trainers within their IFOR branch, group or affiliate or their non-governmental organization. Applicants must have clear plans to take the skills gained at the Training of Trainers back to their organizations. Participants must possess good communication skills and sensitivity, and be committed to respectful, participatory approaches to training.

As an IFOR branch, affiliate or group, and non-governmental organization you may nominate up to four women for this Training of Trainers. Each woman will be expected to fill out the enclosed application form (please pass this form on to her). Scholarships for only fourteen women are available. Participants will be notified of their selection after 15 December 2005. If your nominees are selected, you will be asked to sign an agreement to support them in organizing one (1) follow-up nonviolence training. This agreement will represent a serious investment of your time and resources.

Please, download the application form (PDF file) here, which gives more criteria.

The deadline for making recommendations is December 1, 2005. Please motivate your recommendation, and send your letter to ab.arauz@ifor.org

We look forward to hearing from you.

Sincerely,

Ana Belinda Arauz Ledezma,
Gender Officer
