Regional Desks

In order to build regional capacity, ensure sustainable and culturally sensitive women’s programming, and to strengthen South-South and North-South links among peacebuilders, two Regional Desks have been established for the promotion of gender-sensitive nonviolence training.

Offical Launch of the Africa Desk

The Africa Regional Desk became operational in June 2007. It has developed a a three year Strategic plan. On the 21st of August 2008, the first anniversary of the Africa Regional Desk was celebrated during its official launch at the Alisa Hotel in Accra, Ghana. The event was co-organized with WANEP (West Africa Network for Peacebuilding), Affiliate of IFOR and host of the Africa Regional WPP desk.

The event was chaired by Kalie Sillah from WANEP, and included speeches and solidarity messages from Africa Desk Coordinator Euphemia Akos Dzathor, Africa Regional Advisory Board Chair Joy Mbaabu, IFOR's WPP Regional Development Officer Dorothy Attema, and IFOR's WPP Program Manager Isabelle Geuskens. Due to plane problems, Guest of Honour Betty Murungi, Executive Director from Urgent Action Fund Africa, was prevented from attending. The program was officially launched by Hajia Alima Mahama, Ghana’s Minister of Women and Children’s Affairs.

Offical Launch of the Asia Regional Desk

The Asia Regional Desk became operational in August 2007 and has developed a three year Strategic plan. On March 14 2008, The Asia Regional Desk was officially launched in Kochi, India. The event was co-organized together with The Cultural Academy for Peace, the host organization of the Desk and the women’s wing of FOR India. Mayor Mercy Williams inaugurated the program. She said that women needed to assert themselves and make their presence felt in different spheres of life.

Speeches and encouraging words were given by the Asia Desk Coordinator Suganthi Subramaniam, chairperson of the Asia Regional Desk Advisory Board Stella Tamang, WPP Program Manager Isabelle Geuskens, Regional Development Coordinator Dorothy Attema, Collector A.P.M. Mohammed Hanish and delegates from different parts of the world.

Regional Training of Trainers (ToT)

Regional Training of Trainers took place in November 2007 and April 2008.

Regional Support to Nonviolent Education and Training (NVET)

Support to Nonviolent Education and Training (NVET) projects in Asia and Africa also belongs to the tasks of the Regional Desks.

Internships

As part of their activities the desks also provide an exchange program between the Desks. Two interns from Madagascar and Kenya visited the Asia Desk during March 2008. One of them expressed: “The orientation has been a journey of discovery, empowerment, learning, sharing, growing and personal reflection. It broadened my perspective on issues and I gained various ideas. I learned a lot on no-violence and peace in India that I will share with my colleagues at home.”
