VideosNew Documentary: Pacific Women Exploring NonviolenceThis new 25-minute video explores the reality behind the myth of a peaceful Pacific. Twenty women peace activists from Bougainville, East Timor, Fiji, Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands explain the causes and effects of armed conflict in their region, and the risks they are taking to build peace. "With nonviolence you get more" stated one participant in the video Pacific Women Exploring Nonviolence. She was one of the 20 activists participating in the IFOR Women Peacemakers Program Pacific Consultation, which took place in East Timor in February 2004. Women from these Pacific island nations met at the consultation to exchange experiences and to deepen their skills in nonviolent conflict resolution. Each participant had experienced violent conflict: as a freedom fighter, a refugee or a peacebuilder. All were convinced that in the long run only nonviolent action will result in sustainable peace. The video presents a unique introduction to the East Timorese struggle for independence and the current post-conflict situation, as seen through women's eyes. The video reflects East Timorese women's contribution to post-conflict reconstruction and their concerns about justice and reconciliation. A narrative report of the entire consultation is available upon request. With its unique footage and interviews, and viewer's guide, the video is ideal for classroom use and courses in conflict resolution, gender, Asia-Pacific studies, and women's studies. |
