News & Reports!Reijiro Shito of FOR Japan (JFOR) visits US Last Thursday (27 April) I met with Reijiro Shito, a member of FOR Japan (JFOR) for over 50 years. This was by invitation of Ethan Vesely-Flad, who had arranged for Mr. Shito's travel from Japan and wasn't able to greet him when he arrived at FOR USA's headquarters in New York. Mr. Shito, now 82 years old and merely a student when "the bombs" were dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki on August 6 and 9, 1945, wanted to take part in the NPT peace actions that took place in NYC on April 30-May 2, 2010. Al retired in 1974 and moved to southern Spain, where he established a cooperative (retirement) community, which may still exist. Laura Hassler, Al's daughter and the founder and director of Musicians without Borders (NGO), remembers, "I grew up in a cooperative community outside New York—inter-racial, inter-religious and non-profit—which also still exists. Moira Birss is a FOR Colombia Program, Accompaniment Volunteer Mike Miyake (1929-2010)
Because of these friends, Mike became a Christian and a member of the Japanese FOR, then later joined FOR USA and Canada. Mike contributed to save the ocean from contamination by nuclear submarines and was very much concerned about the Russian submarines which were still left along their coast. Mike died of a sudden heart attack in his home in Victoria, B.C., Canada. He was the husband of the chair person of JFOR, Yoshiko Tanaka and he was a member of the Victoria Friends meeting house. I joined Yoshiko for the memorial service in Victoria. It is good to learn that a man's life can be influential over the lives of young people, as this was with Mike Miyake. And this is why WE NEED TO KEEP ON with our efforts! Kyoko Iitaka, JFOR Secretariat Peace. President Obama’s discourse on the just war in his Nobel acceptance speech was more than a disappointment. It was a wasted opportunity to move the world beyond the age-old justification for war—and the numerous wars being waged now worldwide—and to summon humanity to “choose life, that we and our descendants may live (Deut.30:19).”
